How Do I Know if My Accountant Is Any Good?

Most people have no easy way to judge whether their accountant is doing a good job. The numbers get filed, nothing blows up, and you assume it's fine. But 'no disasters' is a low bar. Here's how to tell whether yours is genuinely good or just adequate.

They're proactive, not just reactive

A good accountant doesn't only answer the questions you ask. They tell you things you didn't know to ask: a relief you're missing, a deadline coming up, a smarter way to pay yourself. If you only ever hear from yours once a year when the bill lands, you might be getting a filing service rather than real advice.

They explain things clearly

Jargon is often used to hide a lack of clear thinking. The best accountants explain your position in plain English and make you feel more in control, not less. If you come away from every conversation more confused than before, that's a problem regardless of how clever they sound.

They hit deadlines without drama

Reliability is underrated until it fails. Your accounts and returns should be filed comfortably on time, not in a last-minute panic that leaves you exposed to penalties. If January is always chaos and you're chasing them for answers, that tells you how the rest of the relationship is run.

You trust them with the truth

This is the quiet test. Do you feel able to tell your accountant the full, messy picture, including the bits you're embarrassed about? A good one makes that easy and never makes you feel daft. If you find yourself hiding things or dreading the conversation, the relationship isn't working, however technically capable they are.

If reading this has put a few doubts in your mind, it might be worth a second opinion. We're happy to take an honest look for businesses in Garforth and around Leeds, with no obligation to switch.
