Common Accounting Mistakes Small Businesses Make

Most accounting mistakes aren't dramatic. They're small, everyday slips that quietly cost money or store up trouble for later. The good news is they're easy to avoid once you know what to watch for. Here are the ones we see most often.
Mixing personal and business money
This is the classic. Paying for business bits from your personal account, or dipping into business money for personal spending, makes a tangle that's painful to unpick at year end. Open a separate business bank account and keep the two apart from day one. It makes your records clearer, your accountant cheaper, and your tax position much easier to see.
Letting the paperwork pile up
Shoving receipts in a drawer and ignoring the books for months is how small problems become big ones. You lose receipts, forget what payments were for, and miss expenses you could have claimed. A little and often beats a frantic catch-up. Even half an hour a week keeping things current saves hours and money down the line.
Forgetting that tax money isn't yours
Plenty of businesses get caught out by spending money that's really earmarked for tax. The VAT you collect and the tax on your profits were never yours to spend. Set aside a percentage of what comes in, ideally in a separate account, so the bill doesn't come as a shock. This single habit prevents more sleepless nights than almost anything else.
Doing it all yourself for too long
Being hands-on is admirable, but there's a point where doing it all yourself costs more than it saves. Missed reliefs, errors, and the hours you spend wrestling with it all add up. Knowing when to bring in help, even just for a review, is part of running a business well. The aim isn't to hand over control, it's to stop leaving money and time on the table.
If any of these feel a little close to home, you're in good company, and they're all fixable. We're happy to help businesses around Garforth and Leeds tidy things up and put better habits in place.
